The South Melbourne Business Association (SMBA) represents and advocates for businesses across our precinct. By becoming a member, you become part of the collective voice helping shape a busier, safer and more vibrant South Melbourne.
Whether you’re located within the Business Improvement Fund area or elsewhere in South Melbourne, we welcome your involvement.
Business Improvement Fund vs Membership
With the introduction of the South Melbourne Business Improvement Fund on 1 July 2026, it’s important to understand the difference between contributing to the Fund and becoming a member of the Association.
Businesses located within the Special Rate area contribute to the Business Improvement Fund through the Council Special Rate.
This funding supports initiatives such as:
- Marketing and promotion
- Precinct activation and events
- Business engagement
- Advocacy
- Communications
- The Precinct Coordinator role
However, paying the Special Rate does not automatically make your business a member of the South Melbourne Business Association.
Membership is a separate process that gives you the opportunity to participate in the governance and future direction of the Association.
Member Benefits
As a member you can:
✓ Vote at Annual and Special General Meetings
✓ Nominate for election to the Committee
✓ Help shape the priorities and strategic direction of the Association
✓ Receive updates on precinct projects, advocacy and opportunities
✓ Participate in networking events, information sessions and business initiatives
✓ Be part of the collective voice representing South Melbourne businesses
Membership Fees
- Businesses within the Business Improvement Fund area
No Membership Fee - Businesses outside the Business Improvement Fund area
Annual membership is available at the following rates:
- General Traders / Businesses – $200
- Hotels and businesses with 10–50 staff – $500
- Major commercial businesses, multi-storey building owners, co-working spaces, retail centres and arcades – $1,250
