Art Activation

Bringing Colour, Character and Connection to Clarendon Street

In partnership with the City of Port Phillip, VicRoads, and Melbourne-based artist Juzpop, Experience South Melbourne proudly coordinated a public art initiative to revitalise key street assets across the South Melbourne precinct.

This bold activation saw the transformation of 9 signal boxes and 2 signal nodes along Clarendon Street and adjoining areas. A total of 11 vibrant artworks were commissioned, turning everyday infrastructure into expressive canvases that enrich the streetscape and reflect the spirit of our community.

Concept & Creative Brief

This project was initiated in response to a creative brief developed with the City of Port Phillip and Experience South Melbourne – your Traders Association, who requested:

“A bold work. Incorporating intense faces and people, with florals adorning them.”

Artist Justine Elizabeth (aka Juzpop) brought this vision to life, designing a series of works that explore human emotion, identity, and nature. While each location features a unique composition, the artworks are thematically and visually connected, through shared colour palettes, motifs, and storytelling, to create a cohesive visual experience along the corridor.

Purpose & Impact

  • Enhance public space with striking, accessible art
  • Strengthen precinct identity and foot traffic
  • Showcase local creatives
  • Support traders by drawing attention to nearby businesses

Each artwork serves as a visual anchor within the streetscape, bringing warmth and vibrancy to high-traffic corners, pedestrian paths, and intersections.

Meet the Artist – Juzpop

Justine Elizabeth, known artistically as Juzpop, is a Melbourne-based muralist, painter, and street artist. Her work draws deeply from her photographic studies of people and the natural world—balancing intimacy with imagination.

An advocate for female representation in the arts, Juzpop’s pieces often centre around strong female forms, layered symbolism, and lush botanicals. Her journey into muralism began in Oaxaca, Mexico, during an artist residency that ignited her passion for large-scale visual storytelling.
